Putting Carers on the map this Carers Week 2024

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

It also helps people who do not think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much needed support.

This years theme is ‘Putting Carers on the map’ and you can find out more on the Carers Week website.

Who is a carer?

A carer is anyone who provides unpaid care, for a friend, partner, neighbour or family member. They may need help because of their age; they are ill, frail, have a disability, addiction or mental health issues and could not manage on their own.

It could be for just a few hours a week or round the clock. Many people act as carers without even thinking about the role they perform. It can be difficult for carers to see their caring role as separate from the relationship they have with the person for whom they care, whether that relationship is as a parent, child, sibling, partner, or a friend.

Engaging our staff

The Bay Network provide a collaborative approach to the care and treatment they deliver and are keen to develop partnership working with the friends, families, and carers of the service users we work, to ensure that we deliver personal care that is of a high standard.

During the month of June and as part of Carers Week the Bay Network will be having educational sessions in each team to recognise and celebrate the role of the carer and family, stories and videos will be shared, policies and strategies discussed and each team will provide ideas and pledges on how they will continue to develop and support collaborative working with our families and carers.

How is our Trust supporting carers?

As a Trust, we have signed up to the Triangle of Care, which is a partnership between professionals, the person being cared for, and their carers. It sets out how they should work together to support recovery, promote safety, and maintain wellbeing.

We recognise and value the carers, family, and friends of our patients and during this year’s annual carers week we want to give something back for all the hard work they do all year round. We want to encourage carers to take some time out for themselves and to remember that their wellbeing is just as important as the person they care for.

We have a programme of wellbeing sessions taking place at our Community Roots sites, along with other useful courses that carers can access.

To get involved you need to enrol either online through our secure booking system or by calling us on 01772 695 365 (Deepdale) or calling 01282 628530 (Chai Centre). If you prefer to contact us by e-mail, you can email Community.roots@lscft.nhs.uk
