One of our doctors, who has over 30 years’ experience in old age psychiatry, is in the running to win a national diversity award.

Dr Yahwant Shukla, who works in The Bay network, has been shortlisted in the lifetime achievement category at the National B.A.M.E Health and Care Awards, which celebrate the unsung heroes of the NHS and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic health and care services.

Dr Shukla has been described as “a hugely valued member of the team” and “a passionate and dedicated clinician, always ready to help his peers wherever he can.”

He often delivers education about dementia to Hindu communities in many different areas of the UK in his own time, sharing experience and knowledge in an accessible way with communities not easily reached by NHS services.

Dr Shukla has also written articles about dementia for the Morecambe Bay Medical Journal, sharing his knowledge and understanding with medical colleagues working in specialties outside mental health.

Additionally, he has participated in research and development relating to dementia, contributing to many different projects throughout his career.

The awards ceremony will take place in London on Thursday 26 September. We wish Dr Shukla all the best!
