Mother of three Denice is in her 50s, owns her own business and during lockdown had to leave the day to day running of the business to her other sons while she looked after her disabled son.

This National Apprentice Week we’re sharing her inspiring story.

“I’m currently undertaking the Heath Care Support Worker Apprenticeship Level 3 at the Trust.

I decided to take the opportunity and do something I really wanted to do. The apprenticeship has given me the confidence to try and fulfil my dream, to be able to do something just for me for a change. I’d like to further progress utilising the nursing pathways. I am enjoying learning new things and pushing myself to be the best I can be. The team I work with on the ward have been lovely, and really helped me settle in. It’s been a lot of years since I have had to study but the team are very supportive.

My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is just do it. It’s the best thing I have ever done. I never thought at 52 I’d be able to retrain and change my career in a whole new direction. Go for it!”

We currently have more than 300 people on more than 40 different courses, mostly staff members but with 50 external recruits like Denice training to be a health care support worker.
